I was born into a household where I often heard that being "too satisfied" was bad and would make me lazy. I, therefore, took it that constantly being a "little dissatisfied" was the only way to achievement and success. Over time, in my mind, satisfaction became a bad thing, and success became an idea that only comes from constant struggle and dissatisfaction with the present moment.
As I grew up, I learned new words like 'complacency' and 'contentment'. I started to look at life's truths in a new light. On one hand, if satisfaction was bad, then contentment was also wrong – and yet, I found that contentment is essential to every human being’s goal of happiness in life, then how can satisfaction and contentment be wrong to have in the present? On the other hand, if laziness arose due to satisfaction, then what was the cause of complacency? As I got intrigued in this puzzle, the truth of the matter dawned upon me. The truth I found, says that laziness arises from complacency, and complacency arises from fear. Fear of loss, fear of failure, even fear of success, and fear of any kind of change! So, if laziness doesn’t arise from satisfaction, what could satisfaction be all about? My self discovery says that satisfaction is the natural expression of contentment, and contentment arises from inner peace. While feeling constant dissatisfaction and struggle is a function of fear, inner peace is a function of self-love. While laziness and complacency are past/future based tendencies, contentment, inner peace, and happiness are entirely based in the present moment! So next time you happen to confuse satisfaction, contentment, inner peace, & happiness with laziness or complacency, bring this important distinction to your mind. Then ask yourself these two questions:
